President Biden recently said that protecting democracy is the “central
issue” of his presidency, and so we are calling on him to back up his
words with action.

President Biden has the power to combat corruption and protect our
democracy and our right to vote, with the stroke of a pen, by
taking executive actions that will strengthen our democracy. We must
ensure that our elections are free, fair, and secure, providing every
citizen with the opportunity to participate in the democratic process
without fear or obstacles.

Steps President Biden can take right now to protect our democracy include
measures to:^1

 1. Require government contractors to disclose their political
expenditures.
 2. Direct the Department of Justice to create a high-profile task force
to protect voting rights.
 3. Direct the Department of Justice to use its various new tools to fight
the influence of corrupt and/or illegal money on our democracy.
 4. Restrict the expansion of executive power over spending authorities
and leadership vacancies.
 5. Enhance transparency at the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal
Counsel.
