Democrat,

We are deeply saddened by the tragic mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine that has once again shattered the peace and safety of a community. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all those affected by this senseless act of violence. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder that gun violence in America is a pervasive and systemic issue, one that the Republican party has let fester and grow.

We need robust and effective national gun control measures that include background checks, waiting periods, restrictions on the sale of assault weapons, and limitations on high-capacity magazines - such as we have here in New Jersey. These steps are proven to help prevent individuals who should not have access to firearms from obtaining them, reducing the likelihood of mass shootings.

This is not a political issue; it is a matter of life and death. The American people deserve to live in a country where they can go about their daily lives without fear of becoming victims of gun violence. We urge Congress to act swiftly and decisively to address this issue before more lives are needlessly lost.

This week Governor Murphy unveiled a brand new website – the Reproductive Health Information Hub [[link removed]] – that provides critical information on reproductive rights, access, and health care coverage across New Jersey.

“While access to reproductive health care is being limited and even eliminated in states throughout our country, New Jersey not only continues to protect this crucial freedom but is also expanding access to reproductive health care,” said Governor Murphy. [[link removed]] “New Jersey’s Reproductive Health Information Hub will serve as a one-stop shop for anyone seeking information on reproductive health care in our State – from access to the health care services they need to the rights we are working diligently to protect. Paired with our other efforts to improve health care facilities, increase reimbursement rates for providers, and grow the reproductive health care workforce, New Jersey has been and will remain a safe haven for anyone seeking this care.”

The website includes information on an individual’s rights under State law to: access emergency reproductive health care services, contraception, preventative reproductive health care services, and reproductive health care medications; make one’s own decisions about the use of contraception, sterilization, and whether to terminate or carry a pregnancy to term; and receive reproductive health care services regardless of insurance status. It also includes links to resources to help individuals access health insurance, information on verified reproductive health care providers, and information on how to file a complaint if their reproductive rights are violated. Providers are also able to access information about critical resources to help them serve their patients.

Governor Murphy's initiative to establish a Reproductive Health Hub website is a crucial step in ensuring that the people of New Jersey have easy access to their reproductive rights and essential care. In an era where Republican-led efforts across the country threaten these fundamental rights, this hub provides a vital resource for body autonomy and choice. I commend the governor's commitment to safeguarding these rights and promoting accessible healthcare for all in New Jersey.

Yesterday, President Biden met with the The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence and Economic Opportunity for Black Americans (The Initiative), a cross-agency effort aimed at identifying evidence-based practices that improve student achievement, and developing a national network that shares these best practices. They advise the president in the following areas:

1. What is needed for the development, implementation, and coordination of educational programs and initiatives at the Department and other agencies to improve educational opportunities and outcomes for Black Americans;

2. How to promote career pathways for in-demand jobs for Black students, including registered apprenticeships, internships, fellowships, mentorships, and work-based learning initiatives;

3. How to increase public awareness of and generate solutions for the educational and training challenges and equity disparities that Black Americans face and the causes of these challenges; and

4. Approaches to establish local and national partnerships with public, private, philanthropic, and nonprofit stakeholders to advance the mission and objectives.

Nearly 60 years since the Brown v Board of Education decisions, Black students in America continue to lack equal access to a high quality education and still lag far behind their white peers in reading and math proficiency, high school rates, and college completion. The Initiative works to strengthen the nation by improving educational outcomes for Black Americans of all ages, and to help ensure that all African Americans receive an education that properly prepares them for college, productive careers, and satisfying lives. I am pleased to see Biden continue to prioritize this work in his pathway to a more equitable and just country for everyone.
