1.??Tax pros: IRS 2024 PTIN renewal period underway Tax return preparers: You can take the first step in filing season readiness by renewing your Preparer Tax Identification Numbers (PTINs) now. Anyone who prepares or helps prepare a federal tax return or a claim for refund for compensation must have a valid PTIN from the IRS. PTINs expire on Dec. 31 of the calendar year for which they are issued. All 2023 PTINs will expire on Dec. 31, 2023. 2.??Employee Retention Credit webinar: Latest Information on the Moratorium, Options for Withdrawing or Correcting Previously Filed Claims The webinar, Employee Retention Credit: Latest Information on the Moratorium and Options for Withdrawing or Correcting Previously Filed Claims, takes place on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. ET. Certificates of completion are available; tax pros can earn up to 1 continuing education credit. Visit the Webinars for Tax Practitioners page on IRS.gov to register for this free webinar. 3.??Nationwide Tax Forums Online now available Tax pros: Visit the Nationwide Tax Forums Online webpage for 18 self-study seminars featuring topics about tax law changes, professional responsibility, cybersecurity and more. The seminars were recorded during this summer?s in-person 2023 IRS Nationwide Tax Forums. Earn continuing education (CE) credits for a fee or you may audit the courses free of charge (no CE credits are offered when you audit a seminar). For a full list of the seminars and more information on how to register, visit the Nationwide Tax Forums Online webpage. The Nationwide Tax Forums Online are certified by the IRS Return Preparer Office and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. 4.??Quarterly employment tax due Oct. 31; encourage your clients to e-file The best way for employers to file their next quarterly payroll tax return by the Oct. 31, 2023, due date is to do so electronically. Please note, employers and other taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas have more time to file and pay. This news release is also available in Simplified Chinese. 5.??Appeals hosts virtual hiring event The IRS Independent Office of Appeals is hosting a virtual direct hiring event for Appeals Officers and Settlement Officers on Tuesday, Oct. 31, from 1 ? 3 p.m. ET. Tax pros, you?re invited to register and share the meeting registration link with others who may be interested in working in Appeals. The IRS offers a wealth of workplace flexibilities, highly competitive pay and benefits. It?s a great place to start or grow a professional career in civil service and offers opportunities for advancement. 6.??Beware of fake charities; use IRS tool to verify legitimate organizations When fake charities scam unsuspecting donors, the proceeds don?t go to those who need the help, and those contributing to these fake charities can?t deduct their donations on their tax return. Those who wish to make donations should use the Tax-Exempt Organization Search (TEOS) tool on IRS.gov to help find or verify qualified, legitimate charities. This news release is also available in Spanish and Simplified Chinese. 7.??Volunteers needed for free tax service programs The IRS?s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs are currently recruiting volunteers for the upcoming filing season. VITA/TCE sites can be found nationwide and prepare millions of tax returns each year for low- to moderate-income taxpayers at no cost. The free tax program serves populations such as rural taxpayers, limited English speakers and senior citizens. This news release is also available in Spanish and Simplified Chinese. 8.??Technical Guidance Notice 2023-73 specifies a mortality table for use in determining minimum present value under section 417(e)(3) of the Code and section 205(g)(3) of ERISA for distributions with annuity starting dates that occur during stability periods beginning in the 2024 calendar year.
