Terri Sewell is the proud product of Alabama’s rural Black Belt and has spent her life fighting for Alabama communities. From her time as one of the only black public finance lawyers in Alabama, when she delivered financing for new campus facilities at Alabama State University, Tuskegee University, and Stillman College, to her work as Congresswoman for Alabama’s 7th District, Terri Sewell has delivered results every step of the way. The current state of the Alabama prison system is nothing short of abhorrent.
Our prisons should be a pathway for rehabilitation, but the reality is far from that ideal. Mass incarceration has become an epidemic, tearing apart communities and families.
What’s even more distressing: while many Alabamians lack access to basic necessities such as food, running water, and healthcare, our state leaders are prepared to spend over $1 billion to construct the most expensive super prison in the country.
We need serious criminal justice reform in Alabama, not a billion dollar prison. Sign on now if you agree>>>
To put things into perspective for you, the prison will cost roughly around $272,000 per bed — that’s more than the average price of a single family home in our state.
Instead of addressing our failing healthcare system, improving mental health resources, or tackling food insecurity, we are faced with an unnecessary and extravagant prison project.
Our resources should be dedicated to improving the lives of Alabamians, not perpetuating a cycle of incarceration with a billion dollar prison. Add your name now to stand with me in demanding a better solution for our state.
Thanks for standing with me in this fight.
— Terri Sewell
