Dear Neighbors,
Marjorie Taylor Greene and right-wing Republicans could not be happier with the election of the new Speaker of the House. Congressman Mike Johnson is simply another extreme Republican, whose anti-democratic and anti-abortion record presents a clear and present danger to the American people.
He was a leading architect of former President Trump’s plot to overturn the 2020 election, supports criminalizing abortion nationwide and stripping rights from the LGBTQ+ community, and has worked to slash Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. His far-right extremism is toxic and could have severe consequences for Americans.
The contrast between House Democrats and House Republicans could not be more clear. House Democrats will continue to work to lower costs for Americans families, support access to reproductive rights, ensure equal treatment for all Americans regardless of who they love or their gender identity, and make sure Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid remain strong for years to come. We will keep working to keep the government open and fulfill our duty to the American people.
More Federal Funding to Help Families Afford Home Energy Bills
New Jersey will receive $121.7 million in federal funding to help families afford home energy bills. The new funds come as families across the state prepare for winter weather and the costs associated with heating their homes. Since 2020, the state has received a total of $631,552,465 for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which helps families struggling with the costs of home energy bills.
As Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee last Congress, I successfully fought for additional LIHEAP funding in the American Rescue Plan as well as a government spending bill and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. I know working families need relief to make ends meet, and few things are as essential as being able to keep your home heated.
Individuals interested in applying for LIHEAP can visit energyhelp.us or call the National Energy Assistance Referral (NEAR) hotline toll-free at: 1-866-674-6327. Households can easily identify if they may be eligible for assistance by using the LIHEAP Eligibility Tool on energyhelp.us.
My Support for Quality Patient Care
I joined nurses testifying at a Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee field hearing at Rutgers University today. I have been pushing the hospital and nurses to come to an agreement that allows the nurses to get back to work.
