Friend,

In 2005, legendary journalist and longtime Common Dreams supporter Bill
Moyers warned that American democracy "is going to die of too many
lies."

Nearly 20 years later, that warning has proved all too prescient.

How did it come to this? Because the corporate media and Big Tech have
discovered that lies are more profitable than the truth.

First, it was Fox News. They created an entire news network based on
right-wing lies and misinformation. Now YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook
have all built algorithms that actively promote the most inflammatory
content, regardless of whether it's true or false.

Democracy will not survive without independent journalism. With reliable
news sources shutting down all around us, we're asking our readers to
chip in whatever you can today.

To help keep the independent journalism of Common Dreams alive, we must
meet our Fall Campaign goal of raising $80,000 by November 1. Please
chip in today.
