After spending the better half of this month putting petty games over the needs of our people, Republicans have finally elected a Speaker of the House: far-right extremist Mike Johnson.
While the fight for the speakership is over, the fight for important legislation is just starting, and Mike Johnson's record makes it clear he's not focused on our residents. 🚩 He introduced the national version of the "Don't Say Gay" bill.
🚩 He's committed to banning abortion nationwide.
🚩 He tried to overturn the 2020 election results.
🚩 He's in full support of cutting Social Security and Medicare.
And while it's not surprising that Republicans would choose someone with such dangerous, outdated, and misinformed beliefs, it's a clear sign to how hard Democrats like me will have to work to push the needle on important legislation.
There's nothing I want more than to continue being a strong advocate for what our communities need. But any opponent I face in 2024 will have the same values as our new Speaker.
