🇺🇸 Chicago Police Officers Appeared on Membership List of Extremist Oath Keepers Group

[link removed]

Nine current and 18 former members of the Chicago Police Department have appeared on internal rosters of the Oath Keepers, an anti-government extremist group involved in the January 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Reporters also found 12 others working in law enforcement elsewhere in the state of Illinois on these lists, which cover the period between 2009 and 2018. Some of the officers had been investigated internally for abusive incidents, including excessive force.

This story was a joint effort between the Chicago public radio station WBEZ, the Chicago Sun-Times, and OCCRP. >> Read the full story ([link removed])

🌐 The Big Picture: This isn’t the first time we have found links between the Oath Keepers and members of law enforcement in the United States. Last year, we revealed ([link removed]) that 300 people on an Oath Keepers roster had identified themselves as current or former members of the Department of Homeland Security, and agencies under its command.

The Chicago Police Department and federal law enforcement do not currently forbid officers from belonging to extremist groups. But some advocates are urging policies that would explicitly ban such membership.
