Celebrating the memory of our loved ones who have departed, and remembering the significance of this wonderful tradition.
Thank you to everyone who attended!

We are beyond grateful to the amazing community, Pixel Perfect Face Paint , Brenda, Ivan, the Mingei Museum and all their incredible staff for helping put on such an amazing event. Our Recuerdame fundraiser was a success because of all of you We raised funds with all of your silent auction bids and delicious food and drinks purchased.

We are so glad we could honor our dead, share a space to explain our work and interact with our supporters, and move one step closer to purchasing a vehicle to continue our life-saving work!

Con mucho amor,

PROGRAM UPDATES:
Water Drop

The past weekend, we headed to the desert on a double aid mission. Along with 15 volunteers, including our board member Jeff Dean, we carried out a drop of water, electrolytes, socks, food and other essential survival items in the desert.

Then, we visited the Jacumba encampments to hand out food, water and hygiene kits to about 50 migrants. Several organizations have been readily providing assistance, to what has recently been declared a humanitarian crisis. As we finished a very long day, we were extremely grateful for our volunteers and your support. We remain committed to provide assistance to migrants and asylum seekers in our border region in every way we can.

You can volunteer for our next water drop by emailing [email protected] and donate to our Water Drop program here ([link removed]) .

News Spotlight:

After migrant woman died in San Ysidro, aid workers say nothing has changed
With growing numbers of migrants arriving in San Diego County in recent weeks, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to declare a humanitarian crisis for asylum seekers at the border and request more federal support.

More than 8,100 migrants have been dropped off in the region in the last two weeks, according to the county — an influx county officials say shows no sign of slowing.

After waiting between the layers of fencing at the U.S.-Mexico border to be processed, many migrants are dropped off at transit centers across the county, often without the resources they need to reach their destinations, overwhelming local aid groups.

Supervisor Jim Desmond and Chair Nora Vargas, who proposed the motion together, said the county had recently begun fielding requests from local groups for help. Although some have already received government funding to help asylum seekers, local advocates say it is not enough.

More than 14,000 asylum seekers were sent to San Diego. Local support systems were overwhelmed
It has been 12 days since a 29-year-old Guinean woman died in Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) makeshift migrant camp in San Ysidro.

Since then, conditions haven’t improved. CBP personnel continue to tell migrants to wait in open-air camps so they can be processed to enter the United States.

“I really believe that another person will die unless there is a substantial change to these conditions,” said Erika Pinheiro, executive director of Al Otro Lado. The nonprofit is one of several providing humanitarian aid to the San Ysidro camp and another in Jacumba.

Conditions at these camps — which offer no protection from the outside elements and offer few medical services — have not changed since the woman’s death, she added.

“The open-air detention sites in Jacumba have continued to grow,” Pinheiro said. “We have not seen Border Patrol regularly hand out water, we’ve still had to call 911 multiple times a day for very serious medical emergencies. Nothing has changed.”
