After over three weeks of chaos in the House, the GOP finally elected a new Speaker – and somehow, they’ve managed to find someone even worse than Kevin McCarthy.
Republicans chose Representative Mike Johnson to be Speaker of the House, a far-right extremist who has pushed baseless conspiracy theories about the 2020 election, supported radical anti-abortion measures, and has a long history of opposing LGBTQ rights.
Mike Johnson's elevation to the third highest office in our federal government sends the wrong message to the American people. The Speaker of the House should be a unifying figure who works to address the pressing issues facing our nation. It's a role that demands a commitment to democracy, responsible governance, and a dedication to the common good.
Mike Johnson represents the polar opposite of what a Speaker should be, and his election serves as a stark reminder that we must remain vigilant to the growing threats to our democracy that are emerging within the Republican party.
The American people deserve leaders who will put the interests of their constituents and the nation ahead of partisan politics and personal ambition.
