THE WEEK'S BIG 3

A new report by ADL tracked a massive surge in antisemitic incidents following the Oct. 7 attack launched by Hamas against Israel, indicating that reported incidents of harassment, vandalism and assault increased by 388 percent over the same period last year. Following inciteful antisemitic and pro-Hamas protest incidents at Tulane, Cooper Union, and other colleges and universities around the country, ADL and the Brandeis Center sent a letter to over 200 college presidents calling on them to investigate SJP chapters. CNN, the New York Times and other outlets issued corrections after they reported false Hamas narratives about an explosion at a Gaza hospital, raising concerns about accurately reporting on the conflict.

Read on for more on these headlines, news you can use to fight hate and the latest info about ADL from around the country.

ADL says antisemitic cases have surged since Oct. 7 Hamas attack

“The United States is experiencing a significant spike in antisemitic cases following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack in Israel, according to a new Anti-Defamation League report. Early numbers from the ADL Center on Extremism show that reported incidents of harassment, vandalism and assault so far have increased by 388% over the same period last year. The report comes as experts warn the U.S. could see a rise in antisemitic and anti-Muslim hate crimes as more images emerge from the Israel-Hamas war.” AXIOS: FULL STORY

War in Mideast inflames college campuses and raises fears of antisemitism

“Someone scrawled “Free Palestine” on the exterior of a Jewish fraternity house at Georgia Tech over the weekend, next to a large image of a menorah. A Stanford University instructor reportedly asked Jewish and Israeli students to stand in the corner of a classroom. A Cornell University professor declared at a rally Sunday that, while he abhors violence, he felt “exhilarated” after Hamas militants from Gaza attacked Israel.

These and other incidents have rattled Jewish communities on campuses across America as they mourn victims of the Oct. 7 massacres and kidnappings..“ The Washington Post : FULL STORY

Editors’ Note: Gaza Hospital Coverage

“On Oct. 17, The New York Times published news of an explosion at a hospital in Gaza City, leading its coverage with claims by Hamas government officials that an Israeli airstrike was the cause and that hundreds of people were dead or injured. The report included a large headline at the top of The Times’s website.” The New York Times : FULL STORY

KEY ADL SOCIAL STATEMENTS

  • Jonathan Greenblatt: This intimidation of students is appalling -- what is @cooperunion  doing to keep its Jewish students safe as they let anti-Zionist attitudes clearly permeate their campus? Administrators must speak out against this -- enough is enough.
  • ADL thanks @POTUS for the emergency request for $200 million in Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) funding to address the rise of #antisemitism and hate in the US in the wake of Hamas's attack on Israel. We urge Congress to act immediately:
