My heart is with people in Maine who are hurting after a mass shooting that took 18 lives and injured 13 more.

And their trauma has not ended. Schools are canceled, doctor’s offices and grocery stores are closed, and Lewiston and the surrounding communities are still on lockdown as the manhunt continues.

The gun violence epidemic is a uniquely American problem. Nowhere else do people worry that what should be a fun family night at a bowling alley will turn into the scene of the latest mass tragedy.

This is a choice.

But Republicans still fear the gun lobby and the gun manufacturers who make millions of dollars using fear to sell more guns. Their refusal to support common sense laws is because they know that it will hurt their bottom line.

And look, I wish I could tell you that I could go to the floor right now and force a vote. But House Republicans just made it very clear where they stand.

Their new House Speaker, Mike Johnson, is in the pocket of the NRA. He’s voted against every gun safety measure — opposing background checks, the Bipartisan Safer Communities act, the Violence Against Women Act. He will not allow a single gun safety bill to reach the floor.

But that does not mean we do not fight. We do not have to accept this carnage. The momentum is behind our movement. We broke the 30-year logjam in Congress last year, and we have only grown stronger since.

The NRA thinks they’re going to stage a comeback in 2024 with Trump and the most extreme Republican Congress we’ve ever seen to push their “guns everywhere” agenda.

Together, our movement will make sure it doesn’t happen.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy

Chris is up for reelection in 2024, and he is counting on our movement to ensure we have the resources to hold this seat and elect a gun-safety majority. There’s no one the gun lobby would rather beat next year.
