National Building Code is proposing 127 changes, with 47 specific to Part 9 Housing and Small Buildings. Two major categories have been identified that may impact Part 9 residential construction in BC: lateral load bracing to resist seismic and wind forces; and stairs, handrails and guards.
Answer these questions to see if you may be affected.
Which option do you currently use?
A. Build braced wall panels according to the prescriptive tables under Part 9 BC Building Code; or
B. Hire a structural engineer to design your braced wall panels If you answered A, check out our summary of changes to lateral load bracing
Do you build open riser stairs or 3-riser exterior stairs?
If you answered yes, check out our summary of changes to stairs, handrails and guards
If any of these changes will increase your costs or impact your business, CHBA BC needs to hear from you. Please email [email protected] with your feedback.
