Innovation Has a Home
in Wyoming
Inside the D.C. beltway, rural
areas, like most of Wyoming, are often an afterthought or
overlooked entirely. When the Biden administration began
considering regions to award tech hub grants, it seemed that,
once again, rural America would miss out on another economic
growth opportunity.
During the application process, I
sent a letter to Department of Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo
urging her to remove geographic barriers that would prevent
Wyoming, and most rural areas, from participating in the tech hub
program.
I am proud to say it worked.
The U.S. Economic Development
Administration announced this week that Wyoming will participate
in its tech hubs program through two tech hubs that were
designated by the agency. These tech hubs will be eligible to
receive grants from the federal government to fund Wyoming's
continuing innovation in quantum computing and nuclear energy.
Wyoming continues to be at the
forefront of U.S. innovation and is home to a diverse collection
of cutting-edge technology.
Geography shouldn't be a
determining factor when it comes to picking winners and losers,
especially as we continue to grapple with the task of bridging
the digital divide. Expanding the qualifications for the tech
hubs program ensures rural communities enjoy the same economic
opportunities and growth as their urban counterparts while
sustaining America's status as the world leader in technological
advancement.
Happy Trails,
Senator Lummis' Week in Pictures
I spoke at CoinDesk's State of
Crypto summit about the current state of play for crypto asset
legislation in Washington and why I remain optimistic that
meaningful legislation, including pieces of the Lummis-Gillibrand
Responsible Financial Innovation Act, will be signed into law by
the end of the year.
WORKING
IN WASHINGTON
Legislative Actions:
I joined U.S.
Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) in introducing the Helping Open
Underutilized Space to Ensure Shelter (HOUSES) Act which seeks to
alleviate housing shortages experienced across Wyoming by
utilizing select federal lands to combat rising housing costs and
increase housing availability.
With the
purchasing power for the average Wyoming homebuyer down 50% since
President Biden took office, I am committed to working to make
housing more affordable and preserve the American Dream of
homeownership.
WORKING
IN WYOMING
Working for Wyoming:
State and local
governance is always better than a one-size-fits-all mandate from
Washington. That is especially true when it comes to managing
vulnerable species like the greater sage-grouse. I joined U.S.
Senators Jim Risch and Mike Crapo (both R-ID) in sending a letter
to Senate leadership urging the continued Endangered Species Act
(ESA) listing prohibition for the greater sage-grouse.
Keeping the greater
sage-grouse off the endangered species list allows science-based,
state-led plans to continue benefitting the species in a tailored
and measurable way that does not overreach on the lives of
landowners and businesses in Wyoming.
WYOMING SHOUT OUT
This week, a study found that
Wyoming is one of the ten safest states in America. While we
sometimes take our quiet and safe towns for granted, none of it
would be possible without law enforcement putting their lives on
the line to protect us every single day.
As we observe National First
Responders Day this Saturday, please join me in taking a moment
to thank the brave men and women dedicated to protecting and
serving the Cowboy State.
