Dear John,

At Equality Now, we believe that the only way to future-proof equality for future generations is to ensure that gender equality is rooted in and fostered by the law. On October 11, the International Day of the Girl, we celebrated Equality Now’s progress at our 2023 Make Equality Reality Gala in New York City.

It was a huge success, raising $1.3 million to support our mission. We continued our tradition of hosting a completely unique, arts-based event that brings business leaders, philanthropists, influential allies and celebrity guests together around the cause of gender equality. Through the theme of “yesterday, today, tomorrow”, we highlighted how far we’ve come, the urgent issues Equality Now is working to address each and every day, and our vision for a more gender-equal future.

We were fortunate to have many incredible changemakers from around the world join us—including our keynote speaker, 2021 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Maria Ressa. We also recognized poet, activist, and #1 New York Times bestselling author Rupi Kaur with the Changemaker Award, presented by Gucci CHIME.

We featured the striking artwork of Ethiopian artist Aida Muluneh and enjoyed inspiring remarks and performances by Aasif Mandvi, Amy Schumer, Christine Lahti, Destiny Rogers, Errin Haines, Jaha Durukeh, Honourable Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie, Maysoon Zayid, Sonita Alizedah, Sheetal Sheth, Teela Samra and Tanya Selvaratnam.
As we celebrated the International Day of the Girl, there was a clear call to action: it is our collective responsibility to shape the future, and we must move the dial toward justice and equality for future generations. Our speakers were a testament to how the very act of sharing our stories can be revolutionary. It’s how we build solidarity, allyship and understanding. And while the march toward progress is often more of a dance–two steps forward, one step sideways and one step back–Gloria Steinem reminded us that, together, we are far more powerful!

Special thanks to our gala Host Committee members, sponsors and guests, and thank YOU for being part of Equality Now’s global community and movement. If you’re interested in joining us for next year’s Make Equality Reality Gala, please reach out to [email protected].

In solidarity,

Amy Hutchinson
