Dear John,
Earlier this month, a foreign military intervention in Haiti, led by Kenya with support from the United States, was authorized by the UN Security Council. This new development is a worrying escalation of militarism in Haiti. Kenya will send more than 1,000 troops to Haiti and the U.S. plans to spend $200 million on this military intervention.
➡️ Sign here to tell the United States Congress: No more foreign military forces in Haiti!
The experience of past UN interventions in Haiti was disastrous. From 2004 to 2017, the UN deployed more than 11,000 so-called "Peacekeepers", which resulted in serious human rights violations and acts of corruption, and only contributed to deepen violence and instability in the country.
Instead of spending $200 million on a military intervention, we call on the U.S. to redirect these funds towards reparations, to repair the damage to Haiti, which has suffered for many years from foreign occupation. Instead of sending in armed troops, these funds can mitigate the real problems that Haiti is facing, such food insecurity, lack of healthcare, and access to education.
World BEYOND War is working with Black Alliance for Peace and the Alliance for Global Justice on this campaign to avoid a re-run of past occupations of Haiti. We will deliver this petition to the Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Congress, to reject this new interference and further militarization in Haiti. Show your support for peace in Haiti by signing the petition here.
Thank you for taking action for Peace and against war.
