The New Districts: Advancing Fair Representation
A landmark achievement has been reached for fair representation, not only for Black Alabamians but for equitable maps across the nation. A federal panel has replaced the previous gerrymandered map, which failed to provide an equal political opportunity for Black Alabamians. This new map opens the door to the possibility of two Black Members of Congress representing the state simultaneously for the first time in history. The revised map creates two congressional districts that will allow Black voters the opportunity to elect their candidates of choice while avoiding additional county splits, ensuring all 18 Black Belt counties are included in one of the two opportunity districts.

What’s Next? Upholding Fair Representation
The recent adoption of this new map signifies the culmination of Alabama's remedial process following the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Allen v. Milligan, upholding Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. It underscored the necessity for two districts where Black voters could elect their candidates of choice, a principle reaffirmed by both the district and Supreme Court. Throughout the years of litigation, the National Redistricting Foundation (NRF), an affiliate of All On The Line, played a pivotal role in ensuring the rights of Black Alabamians were upheld.

Empowering Voters: The Importance of The New Map
Alabama now boasts a fairer congressional map. This court-adopted map could see two Black Members of Congress from Alabama serve simultaneously, marking an unprecedented stride towards fair representation. The ripple effect extends beyond Alabama; it's a testament to justice and a stark warning against any attempt to deny fair representation.
