John,

We’re grieving the loss of at least 18 Mainers who were killed last night in another mass shooting.

Lewiston joins the seemingly endless list of communities in the United States that have experienced a mass shooting. And in the coming days and weeks, they’ll mourn, grieve, and rebuild like so many have been forced to do before.

We write a lot of these emails like this one — letting you know about a mass shooting that very well could have been prevented.

And we have to admit: It’s hard not to be cynical.

When a Lewiston happens, they tell us not to politicize it.

When a Parkland happens, they tell us not to blame the guns.

When a Uvalde happens, they tell us we need to arm teachers.

When a mass shooting happens, our politicians throw up their arms and claim there’s nothing they can do. The gun lobby has its hold on the GOP. Democrats say we’re inspiring and ask us to protest again and again.

But we KNOW our elected officials can do something about gun violence.

There are laws on the books that prevent gun manufacturing companies from being sued when their weapons of war are used to murder people.

There are laws that protect shady cops who kill unarmed Black folks.

There are laws like Stand Your Ground and concealed carry that turn neighbors into violent agitators.

So why, then, is it controversial or “political” to call for law that will actually save lives instead of endangering us? How is it a partisan issue when polling consistently shows Americans overwhelmingly want more gun safety laws?

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: We call BS.

As activists and survivors, we know all too well the devastation that Mainers are feeling. We know how it feels to wake up and find your community has been shattered by a man with a weapon designed for the battlefield.

We have the solutions. We know they work. We need leaders who’ll do more than peddle BS and put people over their own ambitions.

The time for action was yesterday.

To the survivors of Lewiston: may their memory be a blessing. We mourn with you. We grieve for you. And we’ll fight for you.

In solidarity,

March for Our Lives
