Dear Friends and Allies,
PLEASE CALL NOW! Tell Congress that we need independent immigration courts now!
U.S. immigration courts have a built-in conflict of interest: these courts are overseen by the Attorney General, who also supervises the Department of Justice lawyers who prosecute immigration cases in federal courts. Trump's Attorneys General have unilaterally reversed immigration court decisions and imposed political pressure on immigration courts and judges.
Immigration courts had problems before this administration, and those problems have grown worse. An already-high backlog of cases has ballooned past one million. Some judges have resigned, saying they cannot in good conscience follow the orders sent down from the Attorney General.
Immigration courts need to be independent of political pressure. Congress can give immigration judges the independence they need to administer the law with fairness and impartiality. Call your Senators and Representatives today and tell them you want Congress to create an independent immigration court system that can act with due process and efficiency.
Sincerely, Veena Iyer
