John —

Last night, at least sixteen people lost their lives, and many more were injured in Lewiston, Maine. Today, another community is traumatized and mourning the loss of their own. When is enough enough?

The tragedy in Maine was the 565th mass shooting this year. Our lawmakers should have prevented this – but Maine doesn’t require background checks on all gun sales; it doesn’t require a waiting period to purchase a weapon; it doesn’t ban assault weapons; and it doesn’t have red flag laws. Any one of these measures could have prevented this senseless massacre.

As a trauma surgeon with a long career treating victims and survivors of gun violence, I’ve lived through nights like last night–tried to save lives destroyed by these weapons of war, and comforted family members devastated by the deaths of their loved ones.

We must reinstate the federal assault weapons ban. We must require universal background checks for all firearm purchases. We must continue to fight for change.

Passing common-sense gun safety legislation is a critical need to build the future we deserve. It’s time for Congress to act, and I’m ready to go to Washington and make sure it gets done — do I have your support? If you‘re ready to demand a federal assault weapons ban and strengthened gun safety legislation across the country, add your name to tell Congress to act now >>

Onward,
Dr. Brian Williams
