On Wednesday, the Republican caucus of the House of Representatives voted on their fourth candidate for Speaker of the House since Kevin McCarthy was ousted earlier this month. And unlike the other three, this one finally received enough votes to win the gavel.
McCarthy was ousted by hard-right, extremist Republicans, like downstate Congresswoman Mary Miller, who have been emboldened over and over by MAGA and Trump rhetoric. What’s worse:
The new Speaker, Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson, is a hardline conservative who opposes abortion rights and same-sex marriage, and denied the results of the 2020 election.
He has been influenced and celebrated by Trump’s MAGA movement – and has added his own rhetoric to the national conversation.
Rhetoric that local leaders aren’t immune to.
When chaos happens in DC, it affects progress everywhere – including right here on our county boards, school boards, and library boards in Illinois.
That’s where we come in. We work to combat the danger of MAGA, extremist politics by actively recruiting, training, and supporting Democrats to run for office across the state. But we can’t do it without you.
The end of the month is coming up fast, and we set a $5,000 End of Month Online Fundraising goal to help us support our candidates during the ongoing petition season. Contribute right now to help us help them succeed →
