Yesterday, Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana was elected Speaker of the House. He wasted no time in showcasing his priorities, with his very first action to call for the establishment of a bipartisan debt commission to cut Social Security and just about any other program that provides assistance to those in need.
Let's call this what it is: an attempt to strip hard-working Americans of the lifelines they rely upon.
Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP’s food assistance programs aren't just line items on a budget, they are the backbone of our society, the safeguards that keep millions from abject poverty.
Why should vulnerable people be made scapegoats for the fiscal irresponsibility of Republicans? Why are the elderly, the sick, the hungry, and the impoverished always the targets, while corporate bailouts and tax breaks for the ultra-rich remain off limits?
This debt commission, just like past ones, isn't about fiscal responsibility; it's a smokescreen for a political agenda that has consistently shown disdain for programs that uplift our society's most vulnerable.
We have been down this road before, watching as extremists attempt to dismantle the very fabric of our society. We’ve also stopped them before. And now, it's time to do it again. Send a clear, resounding message to Congress demanding they reject a Debt Commission that would make cuts to critical human needs programs.
Debt commissions operate in the shadows, making decisions that benefit a select few while leaving the majority to bear the brunt of their choices. They are set up to look bipartisan, but in reality, they serve as vehicles for furthering agendas that are partisan and fiscally irresponsible.
If Congress were genuinely committed to addressing our nation's debt, the solution wouldn't be found in slashing programs that millions rely upon. Instead, they would ensure that the ultra-wealthy and multi-billion dollar corporations begin paying their rightful share in taxes.
Yet, astonishingly, the proposed House Budget resolution does not include a single proposal to tax the rich. This glaring omission makes it evident that their only goal is to protect the wealth of the elite at the expense of the majority.
We must fight any attempts to undermine Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP through this Debt Commission or any other guise. It's time for Congress to remember its true duty: to serve and protect all of its constituents, not just the privileged few.
We cannot stand by as Republicans attempt to decimate the programs that millions depend upon. Tell Congress to reject any debt commission and protect the essential programs that millions of Americans rely upon.
Together, we will protect the essential lifelines that define our nation's commitment to its people.
