From hunger to hope: Ujeni's story

Send a Cow's Multimedia Producer, Ric Rawlins, recently met with Ujeni and his family in Uganda to hear their story. Poverty is threatening the lives of Uganda's most vulnerable families, including Ujeni's, and as a result, the local wildlife is suffering too.

Ujeni has acres of land and, despite its potential, almost nothing is growing. With no alternative, families like his turn to the nearby Murchison Falls National Park to lay traps and catch bushmeat to provide for their children.

"If people had enough to eat, they wouldn't go there [to the National Park]. What takes people there is poverty... if people had alternative livelihoods, then they would leave the animals alone."  Ujeni

Head to our blog now to read Ujeni's full story and learn how, with your support and the right skills, a future free from hunger and poverty is possible.

Ujeni's family is part of the Living with Wildlife Appeal which will support vulnerable people and wildlife in Uganda, as well as similar work across Africa. If you donate before 14 April, the UK government will match all public donations to the Living with Wildlife Appeal. Click here to donate now.
