Governor DeWine Announces Grants to Support Economic Development in Appalachia
(COLUMBUS, Ohio)— Ohio Governor Mike DeWine today announced that more than $11 million in funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) will be directed toward 11 projects in Ohio that support workforce and economic development in communities impacted by the downturn of the coal industry.
The funding is part of the Partnerships for Opportunity and Workforce and Economic Revitalization (POWER) Initiative to help address coal-related job loss in the Appalachian region [ [link removed] ]. The Governor's Office of Appalachia, a division of the Ohio Department of Development, worked with local development districts in Ohio's Appalachian region to identify projects that could qualify for funding and provide assistance in the federal application process.
“We're taking a forward-looking approach to economic development in Appalachia, helping communities embrace new industries and technologies for lasting growth,” said Governor DeWine. “In Ohio, we’re focused on preparing our communities for the future, and this funding will help ensure that individuals and communities have opportunities for success.”

“Ohio is experiencing an economic boom like never before, and with the revenue we are generating, we can reinvest in harder-hit communities,” said Lt. Governor Husted. “These grants will have a lasting, sustainable impact on these local communities so they can diversify their economies and create great-paying jobs.”
“We are not just investing in projects – we're investing in people, their talents, and their potential to shape a brighter future,” said Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik. "We’re proud to partner with these resilient communities as they work to reinvent themselves.”
Since 2015, ARC has invested more than $62 million in 72 projects in Ohio. The new grants support the DeWine-Husted Administration's work to improve infrastructure, expand broadband access, and boost development including through the new Appalachian Community Grant Program [ [link removed] ]. The $500 million program supports local initiatives to revitalize downtown districts, enhance quality of life, and help rebuild the economies of Ohio's 32 Appalachian counties.
