John,
I woke up this morning, turned on the TV, and flipped to the news.
President Biden had just ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff. That’s when I learned that – as I tucked my kids into bed last night – at least 18 people in Maine would never say goodnight to their families again.
This shooting spree sent shockwaves through Lewiston, ME, but it just as easily could have happened in Lewiston, Idaho, John.
After all these years of increased mass shootings and calls for action, we still can’t even take our kids to a restaurant or a bowling alley without worrying who might walk in after us… and what they might be carrying.
The next shooter could be anyone. In this case, the suspect is a petroleum supply specialist in the Army Reserve. He’s received a handful of awards for his military service, including an award for “Humanitarian Service.”
We don’t know how this man turned from a respected member of our military to a serial killer overnight, but does it matter? We already know what he has in common with the next mass shooter and the one before him: it’s the guns.
As the calls for action ramp up today and into this weekend, I ask you to remember two things:
First, I ask you to keep in mind why nothing has been done to prevent tragedies like the one unfolding in Maine. In the last three years alone, the NRA and other gun lobbyists have paid $13.5 MILLION to over 200 Republicans in Congress, including Mike Simpson, to vote against gun violence prevention. (And $138,000 to a couple dozen Democrats.)
Second, I ask you to consider those last happy moments for the victims and their families, having a normal night out with friends and loved ones. Remember them, and hug your kids tighter. Catch up with that friend you haven’t talked to for a few months. Do anything to appreciate life today and make time for happy moments. You never know when they’ll be your last.
With a heavy heart,
David Roth
