Dear John

This month I’d like your help to make our campaigns to protect nature as powerful as possible.

Recent reports have revealed that we’ve lost 19% of our species in the UK since 1970. And around the world, precious and unique habitats are disappearing at an alarming rate.

So, can you take 10 minutes to answer a few questions to help shape our next nature campaign? Here’s one to get you started:

Have you ever signed a petition to protect nature either in the UK or overseas?
YES
NO
Before I get to the rest of this month’s stories I’m sorry to have to share the tragic news that PENGON (Friends of the Earth Palestine) have reported that one of their colleagues, Islam Ali, has been killed in an Israeli airstrike. Islam was killed in the south of the Gaza Strip after being forcibly displaced from the Al-Shati Refugee Camp. In the words of PENGON she ‘was strong, free-spirited...she was loved by her community, and she loved it back’.

Our hearts go out to her family, and to all those affected by the horrifying events in Gaza and Israel.

Greenwashing is everywhere. But you can learn how to tell which environmental efforts are worth it and which trick us into thinking they’ll help us protect our planet.

From buying eco-friendly products to offsetting carbon by planting trees – can you guess which climate actions are the real treats?

This year’s theme for Black History Month is “celebrating our sisters”. And what better way to do that than to highlight some incredible climate and ecological actions from black women across the world.

Prepare to be amazed and delighted by their innovations – such as Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson (pictured delivering a TED Talk) co-author of the Blue New Deal that includes oceans in climate action plans.

Planting more Postcode Gardeners
Photo of a Postcode Gardener holding a tray of plants and wearing a high vis, sun hat and gardening gloves.
Across the country, we’re bringing back nature with our Postcode Gardener programme. This is made possible thanks to funding from The Co-operative Bank, which has kept the natural world at the heart of its ethos for over 30 years.

This autumn new Postcode Gardener projects will kick off in London, Birmingham and Devon. Each one will get a professional gardener to help residents bring wildlife back to neglected public spaces.

By creating healthier, greener streets in areas where it’s needed most, the gardeners will provide the chance for people to connect with each other and with nature.

This is part of our ambitious target to restore wildlife in over 1,000 spaces over the next 3 years. So watch this space to find out where we recruit new gardeners next.

£16 billion in council pensions fuelling the climate crisis
Graphic image with text reading 'Is your council funding the climate crisis?' and a photo of a woman holding placard that says 'Free our pensions from fossil fuels'
We’ve helped UK Divest uncover new data that reveals local authorities are investing a whopping £16 billion in fossil fuels through their pension funds. This is £6 billion more than the last study found in 2021.

With yet more wildfires, record temperatures and devastating floods, it’s more urgent than ever that our public bodies cut ties with the companies fuelling the climate crisis once and for all.

Thanks for reading, I’ll be back in touch again soon.
