John,
The United States Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC (2010) allowed corporations to spend an unlimited amount of money from their corporate treasuries in U.S. elections.
40% of all the shares held in US corporations are held by foreign investors, not U.S. citizens. Citizens United created a loophole that allows these corporations to spend millions in California elections, even though U.S. election law stipulates that no foreign money is allowed in U.S. elections. Assembly Bill 83, the Get Foreign Money Out of California Elections Act, will close the loophole that allows foreign money to pour into our elections.
Minnesota closed the same loophole earlier this year. It’s time to do the same in California. Join us in supporting AB 83 in the California Assembly to avoid letting multinational corporations influence our politics.
Allowing non-domestic corporations to influence our elections at any level is a dire threat to U.S. sovereignty and to our national security. There should not be any foreign money in our elections.
Join us in support of AB 83 and urge the California Assembly to pass this legislation and close this loophole immediately.
Thank you,
Democratic Values
