Dear John,

As I write to you, there is profound suffering taking place worldwide, and my heart is with all those who are living in fear and pain. This moment reminds us of a central belief, and our North Star at the Ms. Foundation: We believe in a just and safe world where power and possibility are not limited by gender, race, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or age.

The work we’re doing right now is more important than ever. All fights for justice are intertwined, and the strategizing and organizing that our grantee partners are doing on the ground across the country contributes to the movement for justice around the world.

I leave you with the timeless words of civil rights advocate Pauli Murray: "True community is based upon equality, mutuality, and reciprocity. It affirms the richness of individual diversity as well as the common human ties that bind us together."

In solidarity,

Ruth McFarlane
Chief Advancement Officer

Ms. Foundation in the News

Senior Program Officer Samantha Franklin penned a piece for Philanthropy News Digest on the lessons learned from our Safety Cohort, which began in 2016 and we’ve begun sunsetting as part of our plan to move away from issue-specific funding approaches. The cohort brought a much-needed gender lens to the conversation around safety, and unapologetically centered Black women and girls.

“Our grants have provided organizations the flexibility to do work for which funding tends to be scarce, such as sex worker organizing and research. It has allowed organizations to experiment and “dream into” work that might not have otherwise been funded. It has signaled trust in these leaders and their work.”

Ms. on the Move: ComNet23

Last month, members of the Ms. Foundation communications team joined comms professionals from across the country at ComNet23 in Atlanta. They had the chance to learn from and be in community with people who believe in the power of communications for good. In our latest blog, they recap the experience and share learnings on the power of AI, ethical storytelling, language justice, and more.

“Communications and narrative change can be a powerful way to influence, amplify and advance the work of social movements. As such, if possible, dedicate resources for your communications function and make it a strategic priority. Plus, recent changes across social media have shown the importance of investing in your own platforms to stay connected with your communities.”
