Dear John,

We are reaching out to you, our community, with solidarity and compassion this morning.

We are heartbroken for the victims of yesterday’s shooting and for the community of Lewiston. This morning, we are holding in our hearts those who were killed, who have been injured, who are suffering, and who are grieving.

For those of you who were planning to join us at tonight’s Evening for the Environment: This event will not be held tonight. The University of New England’s campus will be closed all day and into the evening. We will reach out to event participants with more information, as soon as we have details to share.

We are devastated by the tragic events in Lewiston and by our country’s inability to take meaningful action to prevent mass shootings. We are reflecting on what steps we can take individually and collectively to help tackle the epidemic of gun violence in our country.
