Seminar recording | New cases

Welcome to COPE Digest

It was wonderful to welcome so many of you to the inaugural COPE Publication Integrity Week.

We are hugely grateful to the speakers who shared their knowledge and experience across a breadth of topics, and inspired a number of questions from the audience which were thoughtfully answered. The conversation doesn't end there; you have the opportunity to comment further on each of the sessions, on our website.

Videos of the sessions, or written summaries, are now available on our website. As with all recordings of COPE events, they are also available on the COPE YouTube channel.

WHERE NEXT IN PEER REVIEW?
Part 1
This month Alysa Levene introduces the first of a two-part COPE Commentary on the future of peer review. While there is some scepticism about the place of peer review in scholarly publishing, Alysa looks at some interesting developments taking place in different disciplines, and publication models.

COPE FORUM CASES

New cases

Five cases were brought to the COPE Forum in September Forum for discussion and advice from COPE members:
* Concerns over the withdrawal of a complaint ([link removed](COPE-VIDEOS-NM-OCT-2023-DIGEST))
* Reviewer citation manipulation ([link removed](COPE-VIDEOS-NM-OCT-2023-DIGEST))
* Request for retraction due to alleged ethical misconduct in a grant application ([link removed](COPE-VIDEOS-NM-OCT-2023-DIGEST))
* Author retracts request to be removed from author list ([link removed](COPE-VIDEOS-NM-OCT-2023-DIGEST))
* Handling undisclosed peer reviewer conflict ([link removed](COPE-VIDEOS-NM-OCT-2023-DIGEST))

More cases than we had time to discuss were submitted to the September Forum. Two cases have since been discussed with advice given from a small number of COPE Council Members:
* Author refusal to sign an ethics form ([link removed](COPE-VIDEOS-NM-OCT-2023-DIGEST))
* How to handle offers of promotion of authorship for sale ([link removed](COPE-VIDEOS-NM-OCT-2023-DIGEST))

Updates to cases
* Request for a retraction from a pharmaceutical company ([link removed](COPE-VIDEOS-NM-OCT-2023-DIGEST))

PEER REVIEW MODELS

The discussion on peer review models at the September COPE Forum centred around the challenges in peer review, whether different models should be considered for different publication types, and opportunities for the future.

The introduction by Patrick Franzen is available to watch again.

* Authorship and AI tools
* Geopolitical intrusions and editorial decisions
