North Carolina is now one of the most egregiously gerrymandered states in the country. This is a direct result of the actions of arrogant, anti-democracy politicians who pursued map manipulation in order to acquire unearned power and the actions of state supreme court justices who acted as ideologues instead of neutral arbiters of the law. In reversing, without a sound legal basis, its own very recent precedent, the North Carolina Supreme Court is complicit in this unprecedented attack on free and fair elections.

Too many in the Republican Party are willing to go to any means to attain and retain power – even if it means bending or breaking our democracy – out of fear that they cannot win in a fair electoral system. We must continue to defeat these anti-democracy efforts in every form – from partisan and racial gerrymandering to defying Supreme Court decisions to threatening to impeach judges with whom they disagree. Our movement stopped them in Alabama, and now we must do the same in states like Georgia, Louisiana, Wisconsin, and Florida, while staying engaged in the long-term fight for fair maps in North Carolina.

Make no mistake, we will not abandon the fight for fairness in the Tar Heel State, and the struggle will continue until North Carolina voters get the equal representation they are entitled to as American citizens.
