Team,
As the first LGBTQ+ Immigrant in Congress, I am incredibly disappointed by the Republican’s choice for speaker.
Today, Republicans voted to elect Mike Johnson of Louisiana to become the Speaker of the House. After 3 failed speaker designates, ultra-conservative Mike Johnson has now been chosen to represent the Republican party.
Let’s look at Mike Johnson’s record:
Last year, he sponsored legislation that would bar the discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity at schools that receive federal funds.
He joined Marjorie Taylor Greene in cosponsoring a bill that would make it a crime to provide gender-affirming for some families.
But that’s not all, he also voted against bipartisan legislation to codify same-sex marriage and supported an amendment in Louisiana banning same-sex marriage saying it could lead to people marrying their pets.
Simply put, Mike Johnson is harshly against the LGBTQ+ community and will do anything he can to ensure that LGBTQ+ Americans are not protected under the law.
He has been saying offensive and derogatory things about the gay community for long before he was in Congress, claiming that homosexuality is inherently unnatural and a dangerous lifestyle. He even said that same-sex marriage could doom our country and democracy.
But the only threat to our country is his anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and leadership.
This is a sad day for our country, but proves once again that the mess of the Republican party has shifted toward ultra-conservatism. And we must do all we can in 2024 to take back the House majority.
This is personal. I hope you will stand with me in our fight to flip the House blue.
