GOP legislators just unveiled their gerrymandered legislative maps that will likely hand more victories to Republican candidates. They drew these maps to give the GOP a good chance to win in 11 out of our 14 congressional districts.

This blatant, partisan gerrymander is a direct violation of the rights of voters to determine their representation.

Republican politicians are trying to choose their own voters, and Democrats will need to fight twice as hard to overcome them. I really can’t stress this one point enough: North Carolina is not a deep-red state.

Under last year’s court-ordered fair congressional maps, our voters elected seven Democratic representatives and seven Republicans. But with the new partisan makeup of the North Carolina Supreme Court and their complete lack of adherence to their own precedent, Republicans in Raleigh have free reign right now to gerrymander these maps.

We know Democratic candidates can win statewide — I’ve done it six times in a row! We’ve had a Democratic Governor (four of them) for 26 out of the last 30 years! These maps do not reflect who we are as North Carolinians.

Republican legislators have changed the rules to secure victory in elections they fear they otherwise couldn’t win. This is disgraceful, but it isn't the end of our fight. Republicans have tried to steal elections from the people before and we’ve successfully overcome their extremism.

We always knew we had hard work ahead of us, John. But 2024 is an absolutely critical election for us, and we can’t afford another Republican supermajority. We’ve broken the majority before, and we’ll do it again. But only if we do it together.
