Across the country, people are looking at the latest headlines coming out of Washington and asking one question: “Wait — who’s Mike Johnson?”

It took over three weeks of wrangling, but House Republicans have finally landed on him as their new Speaker. Here are a few things to know about his extreme MAGA record:

  • He didn’t just vote against certifying the 2020 presidential election results — he helped lead the charge. The New York Times called him “the most important architect of the Electoral College objections.”
  • Donald Trump says he’ll be a “fantastic” Speaker (see the point above).
  • He voted against establishing the bipartisan January 6 Commission.
  • He’s a staunch anti-abortion rights extremist who’s supported nationwide bans. After Roe fell, he tweeted this message for abortion providers in Louisiana: “Perform an abortion and get imprisoned at hard labor for 1-10 yrs & fined $10K-$100K.”
  • He led a group of far-right House Republicans that regularly calls for cutting Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
  • He introduced a national “Don’t Say Gay” bill to block federally funded institutions — including public schools — from discussing sexual orientation and gender identity with students under 10 years old.

It’s clear: MAGA Republicans have rallied around Mike Johnson because he is a threat to our democracy and a threat to our freedoms.

I’m fighting to stop their dangerous agenda, protect our freedoms, and pass policies that put our government on the side of working families. That means passing national abortion protections. That means strengthening our democracy and protecting voting rights. That means defending LGBTQ+ rights.

But if Republicans gain any more power, and they’re fighting for it, they’d have more free reign to pass their extremist agenda and block progress on the plans this movement is fighting for.

If you’re able to, please make a donation of $28 or any amount to support our re-election campaign, push back against right-wing extremism, and grow our movement to put power in the hands of working people.
