After 3 weeks of disarray, the Republican House circus has finally come to a decision and elected a new Speaker of the House, Representative Mike Johnson.

While the chaos within their party has perhaps temporarily ceased, this is just the beginning of a new challenge for House Democrats, as Republicans have elected a far-right extremist to run the House.

Why? Here is a quick rundown of who Mike Johnson is:

He is an ultra-conservative Trump ally and a leader of the election denial narrative. He helped lead the recruitment of House Republicans to sign a legal brief supporting a lawsuit to overturn the 2020 election results.

He is staunchly anti-abortion and has opposed every bill to codify abortion rights.

He does not support the LGBTQ+ community. He voted against the codification of same-sex marriage and has sponsored multiple bills that would limit gender-affirming care for minors and ban federally funded schools from discussing sexual orientation.

Who voted for Mike Johnson? Every single Republican on the House floor.

Every single Republican voted for an extremist election denier to lead the People’s House.

Every single Republican voted for an anti-LGBTQ+ champion to lead the People’s House.

Every single Republican voted for an anti-abortion patron to lead the People’s House.

Mike Johnson clearly does not represent the needs of the American people. And if we can win back the House majority, we have the opportunity to ensure that his term as speaker won’t last long.
