Today marks the launch of our third annual Canada Animal Welfare Scorecard. The country's only report of its kind, it ranks 40 major food companies, including Tim Hortons, Loblaws, and A&W, on their animal welfare commitments and progress.

Animals in Canada's food system endure unimaginable cruelty. Mother pigs spend nearly their entire lives in crates so small they are unable to lie down comfortably. Chickens raised for meat suffer from painful ailments due to rapid growth and filthy, unnatural environments. And hens used for eggs are crammed so tightly into cages they can't spread their wings or walk freely.

Something needs to change.

A single corporate animal welfare policy can reduce suffering for millions of animals each year. Companies that have made public promises to do better must uphold their commitments. With your help, last year our second annual Canada scorecard inspired 15 companies to adopt or repost animal welfare policies or report progress!

But our work doesn't stop here. While many companies have made and published progress, others are breaking their promises. Together, we must hold them accountable.
