After more than three weeks of pure chaos and an internal civil war, the GOP has finally elected a new Speaker. Republican Congressman Mike Johnson is the GOP's newest pick. If you have never heard of him, you are not alone. Mike Johnson is extreme enough to satisfy the far-right wing but unknown enough that he avoided opposition. 

Here's what you need to know about Mike Johnson: 

• He is the architect of a scheme to overturn the 2020 election - the New York Times called him "the most important architect of the Electoral College objections." 
• He served as one of Donald Trump’s House lawyers in both impeachment trials. 
• He supports a national abortion ban and also a ban on gay marriage.
• He proposed a budget to raise the Social Security retirement age, impose deep cuts and privatize the program.

Mike Johnson is a full-on Trump crony and election denier. After three weeks of absolute chaos, and with a possible government shutdown looming, the GOP has decided to dig their heels in and pursue more of the same. It is shameful, but not a surprise.
