After serving as the 73rd Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, I have been reflecting on the current affairs of our state – and I have some thoughts:
The people of Virginia deserve better.
In 2020, I signed legislation removing regulations requiring abortion seekers to undergo an ultrasound at least 24 hours prior to receiving an abortion and to get counseling on alternatives to abortion.
I signed this bill into law with the hope that it would put an end to anti-choice legislators in Richmond – most of whom are men – telling people what they can and cannot do with their bodies.
Unfortunately, that has not been the case. In Virginia, we saw several attempts by the GOP to ban and restrict abortion access during the previous legislative session. And we have watched as more and more states take extreme stances against abortion, especially in states that border Virginia.
In fact, Virginia is the last Southern state to have unrestricted access to abortion care.
That’s why I am reaching out today. In just under two weeks, all 40 Senate seats and all 100 House seats are up for election in redrawn, untested districts. We have an incredible opportunity to elect a pro-choice majority. But time is running out, and in order to protect abortion rights, we desperately need your support.
