Outright International expresses both disappointment and optimism in response to the recent ruling ([link removed]) by India's Supreme Court regarding marriage equality.
"While the ruling today falls short of granting marriage equality, it is encouraging to see that the judges of the Indian Supreme Court have acknowledged the inherent rights of LGBTIQ individuals and recognized their presence in all corners of society,” said Maria Sjödin, executive director of Outright International. “This recognition is a significant step towards achieving full equality for LGBTIQ people in India."

Outright International welcomed the appointment of Graeme Reid as the third UN Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity on October 13, 2023.
Our Executive Director Maria Sjödin commented, “We warmly welcome the appointment of Graeme Reid to his new role. His extensive experience and dedication to advancing the human rights of LGBTIQ and gender-diverse persons make him an exceptional candidate. We are confident that Graeme will build on the important work done by his predecessors, Vitit Muntarbhorn and Victor Madrigal-Borloz, and further strengthen the global efforts towards eradicating violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. We’re looking forward to supporting him and the mandate as he takes over this crucially important role.”
