Hey Swing Left,

Yesterday, Democrats in 14 states cast their votes in primary races up and down the ballot. That included state legislative primaries in two of our Super States, North Carolina and Texas.

Whether you’re elated or exhausted by last night’s presidential results, know this: while that primary season is far from over, the general election has begun in 32 districts in our Super States.

Here are two super-effective ways you can help state legislative candidates in North Carolina and Texas start the general election on the right foot:

Donate to the Flippable States Funds. Every dollar goes directly to state legislature candidates right when they need it most.

Write Letters

Write turnout letters to voters in Super States. Think of them like a door knock from afar, to get Democrats to the polls.

Meet just a few of these exciting new state leg nominees who are fighting to unseat Republicans in Texas and North Carolina:

Ricky Hurtado is running to improve education and health care access in North Carolina House District 63. This district has moved approximately 7% to the left after court-ordered redistricting in late 2019, and the last Democrat to run for this seat in 2018 lost by less than 300 votes.

Brandy Chambers is working to expand and improve health care coverage for the citizens of Texas House District 112. Brandy previously ran for this seat in 2018, and came within 1,110 votes of flipping this seat.

State legislatures shape our daily lives more than most of us realize. They not only make and pass state laws—they also draw congressional maps that determine who gets elected to Congress and, ultimately, which party controls the House of Representatives. In states where Republicans have restricted access to the ballot and drawn unfair gerrymandered districts, like Texas and North Carolina, flipping state houses is key to making systemic change.

This is our once-in-a-decade chance to end extreme partisan gerrymandering by unseating Republicans. Let’s make sure their Democratic challengers start the general election strong.
