Health workers in Gaza with Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) have run out of medication and sterile equipment, says MSF anesthesia advisor Cliff Roberson, who has been in regular contact with Palestinian colleagues who are living and working in Gaza amidst the constant bombardments and humanitarian catastrophe.
“When they [MSF staff] leave for work every day, they think to themselves that this may be the last time they see their family. Or, for themselves, the last day of their life,” Roberson said, reporting that many of his colleagues have also been personally affected by this conflict.
MSF staff in Gaza have raised serious concerns over their ability to continue to provide adequate care given how many patients are in need of medical attention—most of whom are women and young children.
In Gaza, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and beyond, MSF remains steadfast in our commitment to delivering independent, lifesaving medical care and humanitarian aid—regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or politics.
As the anesthesia advisor with MSF France, Roberson provides technical support for more than 20 of MSF’s surgical projects. Additionally, he also works with MSF’s palliative care and pain management projects.
Only 54 trucks carrying life-saving supplies have been able to enter Gaza through the Rafah border crossing in Egypt since October 21. This represents about four percent of the average volume of commodities that entered Gaza per day before the current crisis.
Prior to the siege, hundreds of trucks carrying food, water, medicines, and other essentials entered Gaza everyday. It is absolutely critical that more aid be allowed in. MSF teams are working hard preparing medical and humanitarian supplies to be sent to Gaza when safe access can be guaranteed.
