John,
Republicans are still casting for the role of House Speaker, and the options are laughable – or they would be if this weren’t so serious.
Of the NINE new extremist hopefuls, all but two voted against certifying the 2020 election results on January 6, making them no better than Jim Jordan.
By the time this goes out, one of those nine will be named the nominee. But this legislative chamber-turned-circus is a disaster for Republicans and the country no matter who they pick.
I would even argue it’s a constitutional crisis.
When Republicans retook the House, they promised they’d be the party to get things done. But they’ve accomplished nothing with their power, besides blocking every meaningful piece of legislation and fighting over who should lead them.
Now they’ve succeeded in blocking Congress altogether. Without a Speaker, the House can’t pass any legislation, John.
We narrowly avoided a full government shutdown, and Republicans shut down one of our three branches of government instead.
The next shutdown deadline is just 24 days away, and there’s nothing Democrats can do to begin negotiations or pass a resolution.
If the House circus has proven anything, it’s that the Speaker isn’t the problem; Republicans are. The party is too fractured to have this much control over our fragile democracy.
That’s why we HAVE to flip ID-02 next year. Republicans need to learn that Idaho won’t be held hostage, and that holding Congress hostage is a losing strategy – even in GOP-controlled states.
Can you chip in $25, $50, or $100 today to help make a difference here at home and in Congress for years to come?
