Terence Blanchard’s opera Fire Shut Up in My Bones made history in 2021 as the first opera written by a Black composer to be staged at the Metropolitan Opera. This “opera in jazz,” as Blanchard describes it, tells the true coming-of-age story of a young boy growing up in the face of great adversity and forging his personal identity.

UT’s Department of Theatre & Dance kicks off its 2023/24 season this Wednesday with Ride the Cyclone, a hilarious and outlandish musical about six teenagers who wake up in limbo after their lives are cut short in a freak rollercoaster accident. This moving look at what makes a life well lived will be on stage at the B. Iden Payne Theatre, October 25-November 5.
