Dear John,

Today, we are focusing on an article by Chidinma Ibe about community health workers.

After reading today's featured article, take a look at an interactive gallery that expands on the story of community health workers.

The gallery, entitled "Baltimore Voices," dives into the experiences of CHWs as they attempt to deliver effective health equity interventions at the neighborhood level.
Community Health Workers
In the October issue of Health Affairs, Chidinma Ibe and colleagues document the experiences of community health workers (CHWs).

As they note, CHWs are front-line public health workers who share lived experiences with the communities they serve.

Their membership in these communities grants them unique insight into the social risk factors and social needs of these communities.

Through a series of photovoice discussions with CHWs, Ibe and coauthors identify structural racism as a key contributor to community health workers’ experiences with social risk factors and the occupational hazards associated with their jobs.

They recommend that the health care community work to provide community health workers with increased support and protection as they serve marginalized communities.
