The bad news: In a recent report to Congress, the Department of Defense shared that the amount of drinking water contaminated with toxic ‘forever chemicals’ (otherwise known as PFAS) due to their use of a fire-fighting foam is much greater than previously acknowledged.
The good news: Last Friday, the Biden administration announced that a new regulation at the EPA will close a major loophole in the rules for PFAS reporting.
Up until now, the EPA did not require facilities to report their release of PFAS during manufacturing and mining if the amount fell under a certain amount, an exemption heavily criticized by public safety and environmental experts.
It’s thanks to the funds our members secured in the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that the EPA has rolled out these enhanced restrictions on forever chemicals in drinking water — and they couldn’t have come at a better time.
Our Members know that eliminating these hazardous chemicals from our drinking water must be an ongoing fight — and they’re ready to take up the mantle and keep the pressure on the EPA for more comprehensive solutions.
Thanks for fighting with us, John. We knew we could count on you.
