Democratic Socialists of America founding member Maurice Isserman announced Monday he is leaving the organization for its response to Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israeli civilians. sserman, who is still described on the socialists’ website as a founding member of DSA penned a piece for The Nation headlined, "Why I Just Quit DSA." "I left to protest the DSA leadership’s politically and morally bankrupt response to the horrific Hamas October 7 anti-Jewish pogrom that took the lives of 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and saw over 200 hostages carried off to Gaza, both groups of victims including children and infants," he wrote. "Its statement on October 7 made no mention—let alone offering any criticism—of Hamas, declaring instead, ‘Today’s events are a direct result of Israel’s apartheid regime—a regime that receives billions in funding from the United States,’" he continued. NYC-DSA also co-sponsored a pro-Palestinian rally in New York City the day after the massacre where demonstrators burned and stomped on an Israeli flag and taunted Israel supporters with an image of a swastika. Several progressives, including lawmakers, subsequently condemned or renounced their membership with DSA.

Hit-and-Run Turns Into Shooting Investigation, Police Say

A hit-and-run call in South L.A. led to authorities to open a shooting investigation early Tuesday morning. According to Los Angeles Police Department officials, the initial call of a vehicle colliding with a pedestrian came in just before 4 a.m. near the intersection of 84th Street and Western Avenue in Manchester Square. When Los Angeles City Fire Department first responders arrived on scene, they called for LAPD units upon discovering a victim with a gunshot wound, preliminary information from police indicates. The call was then changed to a shooting investigation, LAPD said. Officers remained on scene as of 6 a.m. Tuesday conducting an investigation. No suspect description has been released by authorities.

Woman Fatally Struck By Hit-And-Run Vehicle In South LA; Car Found

A 63-year-old woman was fatally struck by a speeding vehicle in South Los Angeles, which was later located in the city of Inglewood, authorities said Saturday. The woman was crossing southbound Manchester Avenue at Cimarron Street in an unmarked crosswalk when she was struck at about 8 p.m. Friday by a speeding 2019 silver Kia Optima, the Los Angeles Police Department reported. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The car continued westbound on Manchester and was later located in Inglewood, where it was taken into custody. The LAPD’s South Traffic Division urged anyone with information regarding the crash to call them at 323-421-2577 or 877-527-3247. 37-Year-Old Man Struck, Killed By Hit-and-Run Driver In Downtown Los Angeles

Authorities are seeking for a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a man early Friday morning in downtown Los Angeles. The incident happened at around 3 a.m. when Los Angeles Police Department investigators believe a man fell into medical distress and fell unconscious into the street, near Temple Street and Fremont Street. He was struck by a car, either a 2007 to 2011 sky-blue metallic Toyota Camry, traveling westbound on Temple St. investigators said. The driver, instead of stopping to help, fled from the scene. The unidentified pedestrian, whom they believe to be around 37-years-old, was pronounced dead at the scene. Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at (213) 486-0767.

A significant encampment cleanup operation is currently in progress at the Venice and 405 Freeway in West Los Angeles, with authorities working to remove between 45 and 50 total tents. The cleanup effort, which has been in the works for several months, comes after extensive outreach initiatives conducted over the course of this year. Rams’ Demarcus Robinson Robbed Of Jewelry At Gunpoint

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Demarcus Robinson was robbed of his luxury jewelry at gunpoint early Friday morning outside a Los Angeles hotel, according to media reports. Robinson, 29, was leaving a hotel when two armed men approached and demanded his jewelry, law enforcement sources told TMZ. The thieves reportedly made off with $100,000 worth of Robinson’s belongings — including a luxury watch. The Los Angeles Police Department did not immediately respond to an inquiry for additional information on the robbery. Robinson spent his first six seasons with the Chiefs. He signed with the Rams this past off-season.

Family Seeks Public's Help Finding Missing 15-Year-Old Last Seen At School In Westlake District

The family of a missing teenager is pleading for help in finding her. Fifteen-year-old Michelle Gisselle Lopez was last seen Oct. 12 at the Edward R. Roybal Learning Center in the Westlake District, near downtown Los Angeles. She left campus at the end of the school day and has not been seen since. Michelle is 5 feet 3 inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes. Her family has shared photos of her in hopes of finding her. Caught On Video: Suspects Walk Out Of WSS Store In Van Nuys With Stolen Merchandise

Investigators are poring over surveillance video hoping to identify a group of people who stole shoes and other merchandise from a store in Van Nuys. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the suspects walked out of a WSS store on Sepulveda Boulevard just before 9 p.m. Sunday night. They were seen stuffing the merchandise into trash bags, but it's unclear how much exactly was stolen. Detectives are not sure how many people they are looking for. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

A U.S. Flag Outside A West Hills Home Was Set Ablaze. Cops Investigate As Possible Hate Crime

A man approached a West Hills home Saturday night and appeared to set a displayed U.S. flag on fire, sparking a small blaze and suspicion that the suspect was motivated by hate. The incident was caught on a home surveillance system. Officials are investigating it as a possible hate crime and arson, according to Los Angeles Police Officer Drake Madison. Madison said it wasn’t clear what prompted the hate crime investigation, but noted that the report mentioned the American flag and Jewish symbols outside the home. The case was still under investigation as of Monday morning, without any suspects identified or arrested, Madison said. “I’m scared, I’m really scared,” said Hadas, a mother of four, who lives in the home. She requested that her full name not be published out of concern for her safety and that of her family. She said a portion of her garage and roof were damaged in the small fire before someone driving by stopped at the sight of the flames and put out the fire with a hose. Hadas said no one in her family was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

LA Man Accused Of Helping To Steal Dinosaur Bones Worth Over $1M

In a paleontological scandal that could rival the plot of a Hollywood thriller, four people, including a Los Angeles man, have been accused of illegally trafficking over a million dollars' worth of dinosaur bones, unraveling the mysteries of prehistoric life hidden within the rugged landscapes of Utah. A federal grand jury in Salt Lake City indicted the group for their alleged involvement in purchasing and selling more than $1 million worth of paleontological resources, which included 150,000 pounds of dinosaur bones illegally taken from federal and state lands in southeastern Utah. The U.S. Attorney's Office in the District of Utah charged Vint Wade, 65; Donna Wade, 67, from Moab, Utah; Steven Willing, 67, from Los Angeles; and Jordan Willing, 40, from Ashland, Oregon, with multiple felony offenses under the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act (PRPA). From March 2018 to at least March 2023, the defendants allegedly engaged in the illicit purchase, transportation, and export of dinosaur bones from federal lands. They are also accused of conspiring to conceal and retain stolen U.S. property knowingly.

Violent Repeat Offender Considered Armed And Dangerous Wanted In L.A. County

Police are searching for a 41-year-old man in connection with a violent stabbing in Claremont who is a repeat offender and should be considered armed and dangerous. Officers with the Claremont Police Department responded to 200 West First Street, a Metrolink Station, at around 4 p.m. Sunday on reports of the stabbing, according to a CPD news release. The suspect, now identified as Phillip Borunda, had already fled the scene when police arrived. Authorities located the victim in the grassy area near the Claremont Museum of Art and learned that he had been stabbed in the ribcage after an alleged argument with the Borunda. Paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department took the victim, who was suffering from possibly life-threatening injuries to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. “All l saw was cop cars, the ambulance,” Amal Najir, who works at the nearby Jax Bicycle Center said. Claremont resident Melissa Larose, who owns the Method Lagree, a fitness studio, told KTLA’s Shelby Nelson that she has seen the 41-year-old suspect before.

Massachusetts DA Praises Officer Who Shot Gunman Who Killed 2 Bystanders Moments Earlier

A police officer who shot and killed a man who gunned down two Black people moments earlier in the Boston suburb of Winthrop in 2021 used reasonable force to defend himself and others and won't face criminal charges, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said Tuesday. Nathan Allen, 28, shot and killed David Green, a retired Massachusetts State Police trooper, and Romana Cooper, an Air Force veteran, after emerging from a stolen truck that he had crashed into a building in the community near Logan International Airport, authorities said. Officials described Green and Cooper as innocent bystanders. Allen was fatally shot by Winthrop Police Sgt. Nicholas Bettano. “Our investigation makes clear that the officer’s actions were justified that tragic day. Indeed, it is likely that this officer’s brave actions saved others from being injured or killed as a result of Nathan Allen’s racially-motivated rampage," Hayden said in a written statement. "This was a terrifying incident for Winthrop, rooted in Nathan Allen’s deep White Supremacist hatred. Winthrop leaders and residents deserve great credit for how they have moved to heal the wounds from that tragic day,” he added.

2 San Antonio Officers Shot, Seriously Wounded After Trying To Stop Man From Setting House On Fire

Two San Antonio police officers were shot and seriously wounded as they tried to stop a man from burning a home during a domestic dispute, authorities said. The officers were shot at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday while answering a disturbance call on the city's northeast side and were undergoing surgery, police said. There was no immediate word on their conditions. At a news conference, Police Chief William McManus said a man who had gone to the home to retrieve his children argued with his wife, threatened to set the home ablaze and started to douse it with gasoline. The woman and children weren't hurt, but after the officers arrived, the man went upstairs and shot both officers with a long gun through a window, McManus said. The first officer was shot three times and collapsed while the second was hit by a bullet but took cover behind a parked car nearby and exchanged gunfire with the man, the police chief said. More officers arrived and got their wounded colleagues to safety. The suspect then came outside and surrendered, McManus said. The suspect's name wasn't immediately released. “These types of calls are very, very volatile. They’re very dangerous because of the emotion involved,” McManus said. “The officers are very, very lucky that they weren’t killed.”

Arson investigators are to determine the cause, as 911 calls came in around 7 a.m. saying a woman with no shoes on lit something on fire while inside the bank.

L.A. Councilmembers Introduce Motion To Allow Street Vending On Hollywood Blvd.

Los Angeles City Councilmembers are taking action to create special street vending zones across parts of Los Angeles. On Friday, Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez and Council President Paul Krekorian introduced a motion at the City Council meeting to eliminate the no-vending zone on Hollywood Boulevard that has been in place for five years. The no-vending zones were established by the City Council in 2018, prohibiting street vending in those areas. If the motion passes, street vendors, advocacy organizations and community members will work with the city to create a “special vending zone” on Hollywood Boulevard as part of a first of its kind pilot project. The Hollywood-based project would then expand to a citywide initiative to help improve street vending policies across L.A., Soto-Martinez said.
