Dear John,
As the latest horrific Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to claim more innocent lives, it is becoming increasingly urgent for supporters of peace to do everything in our power to stop the crisis from escalating into all out regional war .
As a prominent group of Iranian human rights defenders, including the husband of Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, warned today in an open letter [[link removed]] – certain "political opportunists have seized on the conflict to press for war with Iran." A military attack on Iran, under any pretext or under any cover, including on the basis of the current crisis and conflicts in the region, will destroy our country and severely weaken and destroy the struggle for the right of the Iranian people for democracy and peace," they write.
Already, there have been a flood of legislative proposals and calls in Congress to ban travel to Iran, eliminate humanitarian sanctions waivers, and to authorize the use of military force for war with Iran. Many Biden administration officials are now warning of the increasing risks of escalation with Iran and Iran-linked forces throughout the region, with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin saying on Sunday that we are seeing [[link removed]] the “prospect of a significant escalation of attacks on our troops and our people throughout the region.” U.S. officials have described “red lights flashing everywhere,” and indicated that “The road leads back to Iran” concerning these threats.
This is what sleepwalking into disaster looks like. We must call for a cease fire [[link removed]] and for all sides to stop the escalation to all out regional war.
U.S. officials have reportedly confirmed that the reason for the delay in Israel conducting its long expected ground invasion of Gaza – that many fear will be the precursor to regional conflagration – is so the U.S. can prepare and put military assets in place for such a broader conflict. We may be running out of time to stop this disaster. That is why we are endorsing the resolution [[link removed]] from Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) and other progressive Democrats calling for the U.S. to pursue an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire to halt the violence.
take action: urge your lawmakers to support the ceasefire resolution [[link removed]]
We cannot allow the world to sleepwalk into war. As Americans, we have tremendous power to stop this pending disaster if we can force our elected officials to listen to us. The more our lawmakers hear from us, the more that sign up in support of a cease fire, the greater the pressure on President Biden to shift course and prevent further devastation and disaster. We must raise our voices now – countless lives are on the line.
Sincerely,
- NIAC Action Team
