Mayor Adams is hurting families by gutting our right-to-shelter protections

Last Monday, Mayor Adams announced the City will limit shelter stays for asylum seeking families with children to 60 days ([link removed]-) , after which the families will have to reapply for shelter.

This comes less than a month after the Mayor shortened the previous 60-day stay limit for single adult asylum seekers to 30 days ([link removed]) .

These decisions bring a multitude of cruel and unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles for vulnerable people—from not having a stable address for their legal paperwork to reach them, to children traveling longer times to get to school (if they are able to stay in their school). Not to mention families being moved into unsafe congregate settings.

Instead of offering real solutions that will allow asylum seekers, and all New Yorkers, to build safe and stable lives in their communities, Mayor Adams is endangering us by gutting our right-to-shelter protections
.

The right-to-shelter policy has been a lifeline for many families and people since it was created four decades ago. The initial ruling back in 1979 paved the way for further legal victories that ensured temporary shelter for homeless men, women, children, and families in New York City.

Despite helping many vulnerable people in one of the most expensive cities in the world, right-to-shelter has been challenged from the beginning, tackling court battle after court battle. It is currently being challenged right now by the City ([link removed]) –they are trying to end the mandate to provide shelter for all people in need, not just our newest New Yorkers.

Mayor Adams refuses to tackle the real problem that has plagued New York City for decades now: an affordability crisis. When half of NYC households can’t afford to live here ([link removed]) , the problem is evident.

Mayor Adams needs to prioritize getting people into permanent housing. By expanding CityFHEPS ([link removed]) to all New Yorkers regardless of legal status, he will save the city $3 billion dollars a year ([link removed]) and get people on the road to stability and self-sufficiency, while relieving pressure on our shelters.

Tell friends, family, and colleagues of the importance of right-to-shelter and affordable housing, and how we can save billions once Mayor Adams finally decides to be a leader.
