This year’s Spirit Day was an absolute triumph! Most of us at GLAAD are still riding the high of the day, but we wanted to take a moment to share our gratitude with you.
Over 3,000 of you signed our pledge to show LGBTQ youth that you have their backs, and more than 300 of you donated to put bullies in their place. Thank you! Spirit Day was a top trending topic across all social media platforms, and our message reached over 250 MILLION people across broadcast, radio, and social media channels. That’s truly incredible.
Our partnership with the NY Dept. of Education and The New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival (Newfest) gave 300 LGBTQ youth from public schools across NYC the chance to see their own short films and stories on the big screen. And icon Laverne Cox shined a literal light on the issue of anti-LGBTQ bullying by helping light the Empire State Building purple.
We are giving LGBTQ youth and their parents a platform, sharing authentic LGBTQ stories and voices in the media, and putting a stop to bullying and hate speech online.
GLAAD is the only organization working to shift our culture towards LGBTQ equality through the media. Support from friends like you means we can shape a world where young LGBTQ people see themselves fully and accurately reflected -- and celebrated -- on our televisions, movie screens, advertisements, video games, in sports, and on social media. For LGBTQ youth, particularly transgender and nonbinary youth, this can make a lifesaving difference.
We’ll fight tooth and nail until we have 100% acceptance -- so that all LGBTQ youth can live their lives in their truth, with authenticity, and free of fear.
