1) Men Without Work
We noted last week that some five million Americans who could be and should be working are mysteriously missing from the labor force. The vast majority of these missing workers are men in their prime working ages.

The labor force participation rate of men in their prime working years (25-54) has declined by eight percentage points, from 97.0 percent in 1963 to 89.1 percent in 2023.

This has many negative economic and social impacts on family stability, depression, lower life expectancies, and increased drug abuse. The report shows, for example, that according to The Centers for Disease Control reported that 49,500 people killed themselves in 2022, the highest number on record. Four-fifths of the suicides were men.

One reason more men are not working is government benefits. Since 1980, for example, the number of men receiving disability payments has tripled from three to nine million. That’s hard to explain given that the rate of worker accidents has fallen dramatically over the past forty years and the types of jobs that men do today are much less dangerous than in past decades.

Senator Marco Rubio has spotlighted this problem, and though we don’t agree with some of his policy conclusions, he is right that policies like deregulation with a focus on unburdening extraction and manufacturing, strong work requirements for welfare, cracking down on improper disability claims, and eliminating marriage tax penalties would help.

2) A Confused Generation of College Students
Mark Penn, a prominent Democratic pollster released new results of surveys taken late last week on what Americans think about the Hamas attacks on Israel.

Not surprisingly, the vast majority of Americans, 84%, support Israel over the Hamas terrorists. The only group of Americans who are NOT fully supportive of Israel are young people of college age (18-24).

Here are a few examples of how the young differ from older adults in their opinions on the attacks.
* Side with Israel over Hamas.
84% of all voters
Only 52% of college-age voters

* There is no moral equivalency between Hamas’ murders and Israel’s actions.
61% of all voters say there is no moral equivalency
Only 36% of young voters say there is no moral equivalence

* Do not believe that Hamas terrorists killed 1200 Israeli civilians by shooting, raping and beheading people.
17% of all voters don't believe it happened
32% of young voters (almost twice as many) don't believe it

As Penn summarizes the situation: “College-aged students are completely misinformed about the facts and biased against Israel.”

That leads us to wonder, who filled their heads with all these wrongheaded and even bigoted ideas?

Whose side are you on?

Them?

Or them?

College students are having a hard time deciding.

3) Green Movement Takes it on the Chin in Switzerland
We’ve said many times on these pages that we believe that the world has reached peak climate craziness – except in this White House and in the Vatican – and energy common sense is slowly returning to earth.

The latest example is Switzerland. In Sunday’s election, Swiss voters showed they wanted to put the brakes on radical environmental policies. Two Green parties lost a combined quarter of their seats in Parliament. Swiss News reported that they “suffered from the hard-hitting actions of radical climate activists, who provoked confusion and even anger among a large part of the population.”

The winner was the conservative People’s Party, which took a hardline against higher taxes and the eco-bureaucracy and won their highest percentage of the vote in any election but one.

4) We’re Winning Our War Against ESG Investing
We at CTUP and a handful of other groups, have made it a priority to end the scourge of the roughly $1 trillion ESG investing scam (which emphasizes climate change and racial justice over profits and rates of return) and, well, more evidence that we are winning. The downward trend of this fad investing strategy is unmistakable as even the New York Times now acknowledges:

E.S.G. investing is shrinking. Investors pulled $2.7 billion out of E.S.G. funds last quarter, the fourth straight quarter of outflows from such funds, according to data from Morningstar. Most of the withdrawals were from two funds: BlackRock’s iShares ESG Aware MSCI USA ETF, and the Parnassus Core Equity Fund, run by the San Francisco-based Parnassus Investments.

For the first time, U.S. money managers closed more E.S.G. funds than they opened. This may be part of a long overdue shakeout: Following a three-year boom in E.S.G. fund creation, there were 661 in operation at the end of September, up 11 percent since the start of the year.

5) Scientific American: Science Denier
We have noted previously how the once respectable Scientific American has become little more than a non-science cheerleading squad for trendy left-wing ideas. But in perhaps a new low, the magazine has chosen to willfully discard scientific rigor – because they like mask requirements.

The City Journal explains the latest perversion of truth and science:

Scientific American, which dates to 1845 and touts itself as “the oldest continuously published magazine in the United States,” recently ran an article arguing that scientists should prioritize “reality” over scientific “rigor.” What would make a publication with a name like this one set empirical evidence at odds with reality? Masks, of course.

Naomi Oreskes, a Harvard professor of the history of science, argued that by “prioritizing scientific rigor” in its mask studies, the Cochrane Library may have “misled the public,” such that “the average person could be confused” about the efficacy of masks. Oreskes criticized Cochrane for its “standard . . . methodological procedures,” as Cochrane bases its “findings on randomized controlled trials, often called the ‘gold standard’ of scientific evidence.” Since RCTs haven’t shown that masks work, she writes, “[i]t’s time those standard procedures were changed.”
